How do we know about the circulation of books in al-Andalus ?

The circulation of books in al-Andalus (= Muslim Iberia) has been mapped in the Historia de los Autores y Transmisores de al-Andalus (HATA), using the data found in literary sources (biographical dict The circulation of books in al-Andalus (= Muslim Iberia) has been mapped in the Historia de los Autores y Transmisores de al-Andalus (HATA), using the data found in literary sources (biographical dictionaries, bibliographical repertoires, chronicles, and other sources), manuscripts, translations, and quotations. There are certain books that can be assumed to have circulated in al-Andalus only through their presence among “minority” communities such as the Mudejars and Moriscos, and the evidence provided by translations from Arabic into other languages. Al-Bakrī’s Kitāb al-anwār is one such book. In this paper, the reasons for the silence of the Arabic literary sources are explored.
