This book is a polemic reply to abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazzālī's 'Tahāfut al-Falāsifa', in which al-Ġazzālī fiercely attacked the philosophers and their doctrines regarding the divine existence, the divine know This book is a polemic reply to abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazzālī's 'Tahāfut al-Falāsifa', in which al-Ġazzālī fiercely attacked the philosophers and their doctrines regarding the divine existence, the divine knowledge, the divine names and attributes in addition to many other matters. Al-Ġazzālī believed that such philosophical doctrines contradict with the religious foundations of Islam. In defense of the philosophers, Averroes wrote 'Tahāfut al-Tahāfut' as a response to breakdown al-Ġazzālī's arguments and counter argue them. Averroes composed 'Tahāfut al-Tahāfut' in the same style of his commentaries on Aristotle's book; reporting a sentence from al-Ġazzālī's book then replies to it, then mentions another sentence, and so on. Averroes committed to al-Ġazzālī's division of his book into two main chapters. The first chapter is on the Divine matters, and includes 16 matters that al-Ġazzālī raised and Averroes analyzed and replied to. The second chapter is on the natural science and includes four matters.

كتاب تناول فيه المؤلف بشيء من التفصيل القضايا التي تناولها كتابي تهافت الفلاسفة للغزالي والحكماء لابن رشد، متخذًا نهج الإمام الغزالي الذي سار عليه في مناقشته مع الفلاسفة منهجًا ودليلًا، ولكن بذاتية مس كتاب تناول فيه المؤلف بشيء من التفصيل القضايا التي تناولها كتابي تهافت الفلاسفة للغزالي والحكماء لابن رشد، متخذًا نهج الإمام الغزالي الذي سار عليه في مناقشته مع الفلاسفة منهجًا ودليلًا، ولكن بذاتية مستقلة في الفكر والرأي بعيدًا عن التقليد، مبتعدًا في الوقت نفسه عن التجريح والإنقاص ممن ناقش آرائهم وزلاتهم، بل أراد من وراء ذلك إستكمال ما لم يستطيعوا الوصول إليه. فقد ناقش آراء وفكر الفلاسفة في الكثير من القضايا كالقول بقدم العالم وأبديته، وقول المليين بحدوثه، وقضية إدراك ذات الله، وعلمه بغيره من الأشياء، وهل له ماهية غير الوجود؟ وهل له جسم أم لا؟ وهل للفلك نفس ناطقة محركة له بالإرادة أم لا؟ وعلم نفوس السماوات بأحوال الكائنات، ومعنى اللوح المحفوظ والملائكة المقربين، ومعرفة الأنبياء للمغيبات، وهل النفس الإنسانية مجردة؟ كما ناقش موضوع قدم النفس وحدوثها، وغير ذلك من الموضوعات الفلسفية والكلامية القيمة، التي تخص الباحثين والمهتمين بالفكر الفلسفي بوجه خاص، والفكر الإسلامي بوجه عام.
