The Arabic and Islamic heritage is in a deep cultural crisis because a significant part of its written production during the first three centuries of Hijra is today lost, as confirmed by a simple look on Ibn al-Nadīm’s (380/990) Kitāb al-fihrist, written in 377/988. This work, designed as the exhaustive catalogue of the Arabic and Islamic written production, shows us that only a little part of this great heritage has reached us. We know of some of the old treatises only through books authored during the following centuries, including much later periods, and whose authors possessed copies of these ancient treatises. They inherited from these ancient texts the topics treated in their books and they transmitted extracts and quotes in order to analyse and study them. There are many scientific benefits to these late books. They reveal the existence of old treatises not cited in the first biographic and bibliographic works, they pass on precious materials in the form of extracts and quotations, and, lastly, they contribute to a better knowledge of the scientific input of these late scholars themselves, their critical views, the pertinence of their ideas and their writings, and their contribution in terms of new topics dealt with.
