This book provides a coherent history of the Caliphs who led the Islamic civilizations from the death of the Prophet Muḥammad, peace be upon him, through to the contemporary world of Suyūtī. The author commences his introduction by addressing why the Prophet left no political successor then commences his profiles with Abū Bakr, the first Caliph in the history of Islam. He considers Abū Bakr’s background and ancestry before the advent of Islam and his services to Islam during the life of the Prophet. He details the factors that distinguish him from the other companions. This is followed by the key events that happened during his reign. For the remaining Caliphs from the companions, Suyūtī provides similar detailed histories, covering Umar ibn al-H̱aṭṭāb, Uṯmān ibn ʿAffān, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī. The Caliphate then evolves to the Banū Ummayyā dynasty, and Suyūtī reduces the level of detail for each Caliph; he provides sketches for each caliph, including summaries of their characters, how they came to power, key events during their rule and their demise. The history of the Abbasids follows a similar pattern to the Ummayads.

جاءت هذه الرسالة ردًّا على سؤال ورد إلى السيوطي حول نزول عيسى عليه السلام في آخر الزمان، هل سيحكم بشرع النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلّم أم بشرعه هو؟ وإذا حكم بشرع الإسلام، فبأي المذاهب الأربعة سيحكم؟ أم أنه سيعتمد على الاجتهاد؟ وإذا اعتمد على الاجتهاد، فبأي طريق يصل إليه الأدلة التي يستنبط منها الأحكام بالنقل الذي هو من خصائص هذه الأمة أو بالوحي.

ذكر المؤلف أنه لما ألَّف كتابه "ترجمان القرآن"، وهو التفسير المسنَد عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلَّم وصحابته رضي الله عنهم، رأى قصور أكثر الهمم عن تحصيله، ورغبتهم في الاقتصار على متون الأحاديث دون الإسناد وتطويله، فلخَّصَ منه هذا المختصَر مقتصرًا فيه على متون الأثر، مصدرًا بالعزو والتخريج إلى كل كتاب معتبر.
