The book is divided into an introduction and a number of chapters. The content of the introduction includes the reasons that compelled the author to compile this book, and notes that when he saw the rabble of the world being misled by their own actions, and the mob of people following their example, that prompted him to compile this book, so that it be an assistance to the judicious in their days. He then dealt in several chapters with the attributes that one must possess with his Creator, such as the attribute of intellect and knowledge, the necessity of moderation, and contentment and patience with adversity. He also dealt with some social traits and etiquette that help in regulating the relationship of the individual person with the society in which he lives, such as honesty, humility, endearment to people, spreading peace, and urging the company of the good while rebuking the companionship of the wicked. He likewise mentioned some characteristics that a person should avoid, such as foolishness, ignorance, mistrust, envy and hatred, and other reprehensible qualities that harm the whole of society. The author’s approach in this was to mention the ideal and explain its meaning without boring elaboration or offensive brevity, citing evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah, the sayings of poets, and what was reported by the geniuses of knowledge who preceded him.
