In spite of appearances, the Qurʾān brings a lot of new information about the biblical town of Sodom. Its contribution concerns two essential points: first of all a spiritual instruction showing the city of the people of Loth as a representative example of all the times God has corrected, corrects and will correct a community which devoted itself completely to evil, then a lesson of “sacred history” which invites understanding that there is no dichotomy between the immanent reality and divine Truth. From this point of view, the text of the Qurʾān is based on a certain number of realia, theoretically verifiable by its readers, concerning firstly the physical causes of the disappearance of “the city”: an earthquake and a volcanic eruption, secondly its precise localization between the Via Nova Traiana and the caravan road of the dead sea.
