De Graf à Griffith

Since my arrival in Cairo in September 1972, I have been in touch with Jesuit Father Samir Khalil (b. 1938), who was a major scholar in Arab Christian studies. At that time, these studies were a sub-field in research on Middle Eastern Christians, especially those who spoke Coptic, Syriac, or Ethiopian. However, I progressively came to realize that as speakers of Arabic, these “Arab Christians” had a special status. In the process of their Arabicization, a process that took centuries, not only did they become part of the great Muslim-dominated Arab civilization, but they themselves participated in its construction. This development ended with Ibn Zurʿa (d. 398/1008), disciple of Yaḥyā b. ʿAdī (d. 363/974), who was the head of the School of Baghdad after the death of al-Fārābī (d. 339/950), and who had as his master the Christian scholar Abū Bišr Mattā (d. 328/940). This article traces the evolution of Arab Christian studies from Graf to Griffith over the last fifty years, and outlines the academic need to integrate these “Arab Christians” into the broader study of the Arab civilization.

What is Islam ? de Shahab Ahmed (1966-2015)

Islamic studies have often focused on the question posed in the title of this book. Was it therefore necessary to add these 600 pages to the many studies that attempt to answer it? It is only by carefully reading this book that one realizes how significant Shahab Ahmed’s contribution is. Indeed, he deals with the issue from a particular point of view which has received very little scholarly attention: the Persian, Turkish Ottoman, and Urdu (not Arabic) speaking Islamic world, which extends from the Mediterranean to the Bay of Bengal, over the period of 1350 to 1850. This world has integrated Aristotelian philosophy, Sufi thought on enlightenment and the unity of existence, while, at the same time, building on the historical sources of Islam to shape a human world all its own. Elaborating on the categories of pre-Text, Text, and con-Text, the author compares his analyses with that of many famous anthropological scholars who studied Islam before him. Exciting as it is, the book does not come without its difficulties, such as a generalization of the specific Islamic world it describes.
