Biography

  • Founder of the Ḥanbalī school.- Studied lexicography, jurisprudence and tradition in Baghdad.- Travelled in ʿIrāk, the Ḥiǧāz, and Yaman.- Stayed in Baṣra and in Mekka.- Persecuted during the "mihna" of Caliph al-Maʾmūn and both of his succesors converted to Muʿtazilism.- Refused the dogma of the Kuʾrān's creation and lived a discrete life.- Resumed his public activities in 847 when Sunnism was restored under caliph al-Mutawakkil.- His tomb became a place of pilgrimage.- The two sons of his two wives transmitted his work and contributed to the building of Hanbalism
