  • Arabic grammarian of Persian origin.- Pioneer of Arab grammar.- Author of only one book: the Kitāb Sībawayh, in which he put forward a general and systematic description of the Arabic language.- The Kitāb is recognised as the founding text of Arabic grammatical science.- Knowledge on Sībawayh himself are few and uncertain.- He may have studied fiqh for a while in Baṣra.- This initial relationship with jurisprudence may be important for an understanding of the early history the grammatical tradition.- He is said to have found inspirations in legal reasoning
