Biography	Grammairien arabe d'origine persane.- Pionnier de la grammaire arabe.- Auteur d'un unique ouvrage : al-Kitāb.- Il y propose une description générale et systématique de la langue arabe.- Le Kitāb est reconnu comme le texte fondateur de la science grammaticale arabe.- Les connaissances sur Sībawayh lui-même sont incertaines.- Aurait étudié un temps le fiqh à Baṣra.- Cette relation initiale au droit serait importante pour comprendre l'histoire primitive de la grammaire.- Aurait trouvé des inspirations dans le raisonnement juridique pour la grammaire du Kitāb.
Biography	Arabic grammarian of Persian origin.- Pioneer of Arab grammar.- Author of only one book: al-Kitāb, in which he put forward a general and systematic description of the Arabic language.- The Kitāb is recognised as the founding text of Arabic grammatical science.- Knowledge on Sībawayh himself are few and uncertain.- He may have studied fiqh for a while in Baṣra.- This initial relationship with jurisprudence may be important for an understanding of the early history the grammatical tradition.- He is said to have found inspirations in legal reasoning.
